Poem: The Creek

The Creek

You have walked this creek many times,
alone and with your children,
your bare feet shifting with the current
and the stones, loose and slick,

that lie on the bottom,
walking to nowhere,
for the joy of the walk,
for the challenge of simply moving

from one place to another.

The water is cold, and runs swift,
ever changing with each day
of dryness, with each storm
that turns this small creek

into a torrent, dangerous,
yet temporary, always
returning with time,
to it's nature.

The picture is of a nearby creek where my son and I did some creekwalking two weeks ago while he was visiting me from Virginia. You can click on it for a larger version.

Things may also be lurking below the surface, Tom, to cause us to stumble, by which means we learn to tread more carefully.

Beautiful, Tom. I can feel those slimy riverbed rocks under my feet. I especially like "always returning with time to it's nature".

your poetry is as lovely as ever.... very nice way to spend my morning, browsing through.

Sage observation by Derrick. Often we find, waiting just on the other side of our great joys, some of great despairs. Fortunately our God and our friends are there as well.
A meandering creek near my childhood home was my favorite playground. Go back to the creek; focus on the joy and continuity of the water.
Peace be with you.
