Poem: The Sadness of Winter

The Sadness of Winter

Snow piles in the garden,
ghostly lumps of white,
vague, faceless, colorless,
robbed of life

by a winter season
that has stretched for decades,
help close by a belief
that summer is for someone else,

not for this place of deep north
that you have chose,
a place of winter,
unending, even

when color surrounds you.

A sad poem, but I am not sad. I am merely remembering sadness and how it can cripple.

Winter is hitting Vermont with a vengeance and my flower beds lie under feet of snow. But I know there are flowers underneath, like these, taken last spring. You can click on the image for a larger version.

Autumn Walk

It has been a long walk,
over the mountain ridge
and along the valley
ripe with Autumns harvest,

a long walk in the October cold,
where frost still lies on the shadowed grass,
and the warming sunlight
lies forever outside your grasp,

the clouds shifting with winds
beyond your reach,
to a place you can see,
but can never feel.

Poem: Sadness

Sadness

Like dusk,
it does not rob life of life,
but colors fade,
warmth cools,
the vibrancy of day slows,
and a pall falls
over everything.

It is not the end of life,
but a waystation,
a darkness deep,
but awaiting.

Poem: Tending the Shadows

Tending the Shadows

You tend to the shadows,
those dark places in the heart,
the empty spaces,
that cry and rant and flail
in a world that somehow
you cannot grasp, yet

dances around you with joy
tantalizingly close,
yet still distant in a way you cannot understand,
so easy for others,
so elusive for you.

Poem: There is no forever

There is no forever

There is no forever.
Flowers bloom and die.
Leaves fall and bud anew.
Tides rise and fall and rise again.

There is no forever.
Lovers fail you.
Friends abandon you.
The dearest die.

There is no forever,
only the moment,
the reaching, the hope
for what only God can give,

the moment,
like manna, his fleeting eternal gift:
all we need,
for as long as we accept it.
