Poem: Graduation Day

Graduation Day

Just like that it's done.
The speeches are made,
the last notes of the music are finished.
The hats, just a short while ago flying in celebration
have been picked up and taken away.

The hugs, tears, laughter, dancing, pictures
and promises are made and
the hall is empty.

Like dandelion seeds,
the winds of time blow
and we drift on air,
fate and our own internal geography

carrying us to...

My daughter graduated from High School in Virginia on Thursday. So of course it got me thinking.

The picture was taken at the Salem Civic Center, in Salem, Va. You can click on it for a larger version.
