Poem: The Mystery of Gates

The Mystery of Gates

You stand at the gate, nearly heartshaped,
the walls around it stone and high,
the wood planks thick and aged,
ringed with hardware from another age,
and wonder....

Is it there to keep you out,
to protect some perfect soul
from your infidel's imperfection,
to prevent ruin and chaos
from entering the holy ground;

or to hold something else,
something dark and sinister,
secret and devouring,
in?

The picture is of the Kali Temple Gate, in of all places, Disney World's Animal Kingdom. You can click on it for a larger version.

You had me fooled, Tom. Still the nature of such gates needs pondering...The Animal Kingdom?....humm? Don't you suppose they would have tried to keep a certain species out?

Very thought provoking piece, Tom.
Gates to protect or prevent?

I would never have guessed Disney on the photo!

Firelight, Often I use images to spur the muse, but this time I wrote the poem, then had to search out a picture to illustrate it. This was as close as I got.

Willow, gates, walls, real or emotional, they all serve the same purposes, and I am never quite sure what they are really there for

Hi Tom,

I would say that gates serve the dual purpose. They preserve and prevent on both sides. But usually they are to protect what is on the inside!

I agree with Derrick.
Everything has a duality..there is not an "in" without an "out"...
good poem..
