Poem: Cave Walking
Cave Walking
Darkness is complete,
no light, no shadows, nothing
except the knowledge
that there are paths to walk,
rocks to harm knees and heads,
and deep, deadly shafts
waiting for your final step.
And so you have waited,
calling into the black,
hearing echoes, and
faint whispers that beckon
like Ulysses' sirens' songs,
calling, promising, hinting, yet
telling you
nothing.
And so, your choice.
Stay here and die,
a safe, slow, torturous death,
or walk into the black
embracing the invisible journey
into light,
into death.
